How To Choose Your Front Door
Your front door is not just something to enter and exit through; it should be a statement piece and compliment your home. After all, this is the first thing people will usually see upon arriving at your home.
Whether you are upgrading your existing front door or building a new home you should take some time to think about what you want from your front door – this is definitely a worthy investment! Here are some things to consider while making your decision.
1. How much are you willing to spend?
Obviously you can’t get a door you can’t afford – but you should set a reasonable budget and look for a door within that.
- what the door itself will cost
- what the instillation will cost
- what the maintenance on the door will cost (does it need regular treatment or re-painting?)
- finish costs – additional painting, staining, glass panels etc.
- estimated life-span
- features included
2. Style and design
Once you have a budget you can set off to find a door within that – however you need to look for a particular style of door in order for it to match your home.
There are different style homes and door styles to suit. Some home styles include:
Your home style will determine what type of door you choose – a contemporary home will suit big aluminium-framed glass sliding doors, while a more traditional home might look better with a wooden door with a glass window.
This will affect your choice of materials – wood, aluminium-frames, steel, glass etc.
What you want out of your door will also play a role in your choice. Is your door to add aesthetic value and architectural beauty only, or to increase energy efficiency and add natural light to your home?
Also think about whether you want a single door where one can simply walk in and out or a bigger door, like a folding or sliding door that can open up onto a patio and allow for free movement and air flow into the house.
The size of your entry way will obviously also play a role in your door choice is you are adding to an existing home or design.
